Elections to the Vicepresident of The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) Board

In october 2006 will be held the elections to the Vicepresident of The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) Board.

The following people have been nominated and have agreed to stand for election:

Mahendranath Busgopaul, Mauritius
Rose Ekeleme, Nigeria
Oscar Garcia, Argentina
Maria Teresa Gnecco, Colombia
Tan Chee Koon, Singapore
Leo Wong, Canada

Two people, Leo and Oscar, send us their covering letters, we publish an extract of them:

Leo Wong

“My name is Leo Wong, and I am currently one of two youth representatives on the Board of Directors for IAVE. I am pleased and honored to be nominated as a candidate for the Vice-President position”.

“I was introduced into the IAVE Board during the 2002 World Volunteer Conference in Seoul…We were a voice for volunteerism on an international stage, as well as a networking channel for our members. In my opinion, the greatest challenge for IAVE to be an effective organization is to motivate our members to see the value in belonging to an international body like ours. We need to ensure each person in each constituency is aware and has access to ways they can voice their ideas and opinions….By combining a leadership role with an effective three-way communications plan (between members, IAVE communications and external partners) we can strengthen our messages about volunteerism”

“In my opinion, our membership base is our core strength and foundation…We will need to reconfigure our membership structure to be more relevant to each group and reflective of the utility they receive from being an IAVE member…”

“Secondly, I intend to continue my involvement and leadership on the IAVE.org project, redesigning and shaping our website to the interests of our membership…I am committed to making our web presence as dynamic as the nature of our membership…”

“Finally, my involvement with networking and preparing youth for participation in their home communities and at the world conference youth forums has allowed me to understand where the future of our organization lies. When a young person interacts with another member of IAVE, I see the brilliant moment of exchange take place…diffusion of experiences and energy. Both individuals leave the discussion invigorated by more wisdom and perspective. As Vice-President, I intend to motivate all of us to seek out these ‘exchange moments’ and grow from our participation in IAVE as better people…”

“On a more personal note…I am currently completing my doctoral degree in social marketing in Edmonton, Canada …As a web-savvy, younger person…making me virtually accessible 24 hours a day...As a volunteer, I have become involved at all levels of society, from local sporting teams, to schools, to community groups, to national organizations and of course, international associations of the volunteering kind…IAVE will become more relevant to more people for many years to come…critical role in strengthening the bonds of our society for the interests of peace”

Oscar García

“My first contact with IAVE was in 1987 when I was a young Volunteer trying to understand the real
dimension of this worldwide phenomenon.

Since then, I´ve worked and participated actively in IAVE and I went to all the World Conferences
between 1992 and 2002, and participate as Board Member in the last 6 years, seeing the tremendous growing of Volunteering in several countries, moved by IAVE in many of them.

But the task is not ended: there are big opportunities to expand IAVE more and more, and as Vice President I will work near the president mainly in 4 tracks:
1)     first of all, the spreading of IAVE as leader NGO in those countries where we ´re not yet, including the strengthening of present networks in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America;
2)    Reinforce the Membership, as a core value of IAVE: “IAVE is its members.”, trying to include mainly Youth, and Organizations  ;
3)    The joint use of a newness product: “e-learning” courses, to train volunteers and National Representatives, using the advantages or the IAVE International Resource Center, to give every IAVE member all over the world, the opportunity to receive and give training in Volunteering affairs; and
4)     To work hard to celebrate 40 years! since the first IAVE Conference with a strong 20 th World Volunteering Conference in 2008, and a coordinate  campaign in all the countries, to celebrate the 40th IAVE anniversary .

I´m now asking for your vote, in the understanding that to make IAVE  a real worldwide leader Organization, we need a balanced Board of Directors, with members of all the regions; and - as you can see - there is no Latin American in the Executive Committee”
