Quepo Joins the “Ban the Plastic Bag, Catalonia!” Campaign

“In Catalonia alone, 14 million plastic bags are used every weekend.”

“If every resident of Catalonia would save just one plastic bag, we would save enough energy to circle the earth by car 22 times.”

The “Cataluña Libre de Bolsas” (Ban the Plastic Bag, Catalonia!) campaign was proposed as a tool to raise awareness with administrations, organizations, citizenry, institutions and economic agents of Catalonia, in working toward the effective reduction of plastic bags, which are a prime example of the “disposable” culture.

Going on these premises and knowing that the success of the campaign involved positive and immediate change, we at Quepo wanted to be actively involved with Fundació de Prevencio de Residus i Consum Responsable, working with the campaign in supporting production of the campaign video “spot” and taking on the task of circulating it. We also coordinated and produced photos of various “media celebrities” in the audiovisual sector who lent their support through Quepo, and we have provided audiovisual coverage throughout the different phases of the campaign.

You can find more information, sign the campaign manifesto, and learn about many more ways to actively participate at: www.residusiconsum.org/catlliurebosses

Main impacts of plastic bags in Catalonia:

They are made from petroleum, which is now known to be a non-renewable and costly resource.

They represent 2.32% of the trash weight, and more than 14 million bags are used every weekend.

Recycling is rare and energetically expensive, and the majority get thrown away or incinerated.

Manufacturing and incineration emit pollutants, such as dioxins, hydrogen cyanide, etc.

Plastic bags could last up to 500 years in the landfill.

Dispersing them into the environment affects both land and aquatic animals.

They are too easy of a substitute for reusable bags.

Saving just one bag per person would cut the emission of 117 tons of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

And our question is – what are we waiting for?

Help us reduce the number of plastic bags!!
