WHY LAND STEWARDSHIP AND PRIVATE PROTECTED AREAS SHOULD BOTHER YOU? A SNAPSHOOT OF AN ...

Protected areas are owned and managed through private mechanisms around the world, and their number and extent are growing fast. Often the result of local initiative and conducted without the direct intervention of government, they are not yet fully integrated into national conservation planning or reporting in many countries. The international system of protected area management categories has historically emphasized the role of governments. Reflecting this, private protected areas and its main actors (owners, users, trusts and conservancies…) are not as well understood globally as their contributions warrant. This Aliances session is presenting the results of an international workshop aimed at defining the state of the art on land stewardship and private land conservation worldwide. Global commonalities and regional distinctions will be discussed while identifying the key positive aspects and challenges to further strength this conservation strategy. The session will include: exchange of experiences between land stewardship organisations, discussions on the convenience of establishing a IUCN agenda and Task Force on private conservation and stewardship, definition of standard criteria for land areas to enter into stewardship schemes, discussions on the role of land stewardship schemes in already protected areas (marine or terrestrial) and governance issues, IUCN protected areas classification and land stewardship initiatives, and the role of conservation areas managed by NGOs and government conservation agencies worldwide. If you are a fan of private conservation, or you thought conservation is only a matter of government agencies, come and join us for this session!
