Enter the School Superhero Comic Contest!

Enter the School Superhero Comic Contest!

UNICEF and Comics Uniting Nations are calling on children and young people to defeat the ultimate supervillain – The Silence – to help end violence in and around schools.

The Silence large

The Silence – a supernatural character that uses its powers to stop children from speaking up and taking action against violence in and around schools – was unveiled at New York Comic Con this week to launch UNICEF and Comics Uniting Nations’ superhero comic contest. Children and young people aged 25 years and under are invited to design their own comic superhero that will defeat The Silence and help keep children safe in school.

“There should be no room for Silence when it comes to children’s safety,” said UNICEF Director of Communication Paloma Escudero. “With this creative contest, we are hoping to get students, teachers, families and communities to speak up and beat The Silence.”

From fighting and bullying to sexual harassment and corporal punishment, violence in and around school can have devastating, long-term consequences for children. The Silence superhero comic contest will encourage children and young people to be part of UNICEF’s global campaign to shed light on and spark action to #ENDviolence in schools through the creative medium of comic design.

The top submissions in the contest will be chosen after the closing date on 25th October by a special panel of judges, including comic artist Gabriel Picolo and last year’s comic contest winner Sathviga ‘Sona’ Sridhar. The public will then have the opportunity to vote online for their favourite comic hero between 16th and 25thNovember. The winner will be announced in December and will work with a professional team to turn their winning idea into a full-length comic book. Their comic will be presented to World Leaders at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations in July 2019, as well as distributed to schools and children worldwide.

21-year-old Sathviga ‘Sona’ Sridhar, from Chennai, India, won UNICEF’s inaugural superhero comic contest in 2017. With a focus on combatting climate change, her winning character ‘Light’ was a half tree-half human who uses special powers to save nature from a warming planet. The contest received nearly 2,900 submissions by young people from 99 different countries and more than 21,000 votes from 162 countries were cast to determine the winner.

8 applications to improve the management of your organization

8 applications to improve the management of your organization

We make a collection of 8 tools for computers and mobile devices that can be very useful for entities to carry out all those tasks that have to do with information and communication.
CommonsCloud

You'll be sure to know cloud hosting services like Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox. Well, CommonsCloud is a platform that is being built as a collective project based on cooperation and self-management that allows us to do the same things (file hosting, use online applications, etc.), as an alternative to so-called at the beginning of the paragraph. This platform is based on the philosophy of the procomus.

Google Calendar

At this time, who does not know the calendar and electronic calendar of the almighty Google? The fact that events are stored 'online' allows the calendar to be viewed from different places and devices. You can also use multiple calendars, which we can add and share with different levels of permissions for users, allowing collaborative work.

Pixler

It is a complete 'suite' of online image editing that allows us to make modifications very quickly and easily. With Pixler we do not have to download or install any application, and it does not require advanced knowledge to make photographic retouching. Pixler is an alternative to Gimp for working online, we only need a computer, a tablet or a smartphone and an Internet connection.

Canva

Canva is a free web design tool that allows us to easily create documents, posters, infographics, business cards, graphics and much more. It's not a graphic design tool, but a service that helps us make image composition. Canva offers us predefined designs in professional and elegant templates. It also allows us to upload images, add text, change the layout of the elements to the template, etc.

Social SIC

It is a dynamic solution that integrates all project management processes, both internal and external, aimed at social initiative entities. It incorporates tools that are specifically designed to improve the management of associations, foundations, federations, cooperatives and other entities in the third sector. It improves the monitoring of the participating people, the coordination with collaborating entities and the monitoring of the workers.

Hangouts

This Google service offers us the possibility to make video conferencing of up to 15 people in the web version and up to 10 in the mobile version. We can also share the screen of our device, share documents and images, send 'emojis' and record the videoconferencing. You just need to have an account on Google and connect with other people through this platform.

Evernote

This tool is a fantastic notebook, but goes much further. Evernote allows us to create, organize and share written notes, voice notes, photos, videos, and GPS locations, among other options. Its great potential lies in the fact that it allows us to have all our notes synchronized in different devices (computer, 'smartphone', tablet ...) and to facilitate teamwork by sharing the information of the notes.

Trello

Trello is a project management software with a web interface. He uses the kanban system to record activities with virtual cards in a way that organizes tasks, allows them to add lists, attach files, tag events, add comments and share boards.

The new session of TURN ONLINE on online activism was very successful

The new session of TURN ONLINE on online activism was very successful

Within the framework of the projects to help digitization in youth organizations, the fourth session of our TurnOnline took place from September 18 to 23. This session was held in Bulgaria and discussed online activism.

Online activism

Online activism as a concept exists around 30 years and takes its beginning from the first online protest in 1990 as got the name Lotus MarketPlace. But in spite of the 30 old history of online activism concept, its methods and approaches in the youth NGOs field are not very well known.

One of the project objectives is to empower youth NGOs to develop their actions in the field of online activism by strategic way. Our intention is to move from the “clicktivism” and “to save the world click here” culture to conscious and well planned online and digital activism that implies civic engagement, social mobilization and social changes through strategic usage of Internet and digital tools. Within this line of the project we will implement three activities.

TRAINING-SEMINAR ON ONLINE ACTIVISM

The training  took place in Sofia (Bulgaria) in September, 2018.
The main topics of the activity are:
- history of online activism,
- elements and types of online activism,
- “clicktivism” and “to save the world click here” culture,
- good examples of online activism.
The theme of online activism is a central one of our project. The training has an important role in the process of preparation of the final Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).

THE MOOC ON DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF YOUTH NGOS

It is a summary of the all implemented activities.  The MOOC will be organized in November- December 2018 and will last three weeks. Every week will be dedicated to different topic:
1st week – Digital management and social communication,
2nd week – digital tools for nonformal education,
3d week – online activism.
This MOOC could be interesting for the wide spectrum of the professionals working in the field of youth work: directors of the youth NGOs, community managers, youth workers, project managers and youth trainers. So, going through this MOOC, youth NGO will get all necessary tools for digital transformation and professional work in the online reality.

CONFERENCE DAY

The conference on the topic of online activism that we are going to implement in Barcelona, in February 2019. During this conference we will present all project results.
