It is a private and plural organization that coordinates and offers service to the federated affiliations of social volunteering, and it is directed and managed by volunteers of the proper affiliations. Nowadays there is more than 300 federated NGOs in the whole Catalonia. The Catalan Federation of Social Volunteering started due to the resolutions made for the members of the associative social Catalan world in the meeting of Monells (Girona) in May of 1986, as a response to the political situation that were compromising the leaders to support the volunteering during 1985.

Sectors of action

From the different member NGOs, the social volunteer works in the following sectors: Alcoholism and drug addiction, physical and psychic disabilities, family-infancy-youth, elder people, poverty, the fourth world, prisons, health, AIDS, third world, immigration.

The objective is to help the entities and the volunteers social groups so they would get all the volunteers needed in the best conditions (preparation, and so on) to realize their task effectively. And mainly, the objective is to motivate the population to become volunteers in the social action organization. We want to show the power that volunteering get when they believe in what they do, and when they put all their will and effort for the objective that run them. Their values “We believe in a just society. In a responsible volunteering working for service and commitment. In the affiliations that were born to relieve needs and denounce injustices. In a federation of volunteers, with volunteers, and for the volunteers.

Social impact

The FCVS is the only Catalan federation that works mainly for the social volunteering and it assembles the majority of this Catalan movement. The social volunteers offer a service without expecting any economic compensation, in a continuous way, for the most vulnerable groups or groups with basic needs, being a part of an organized entity and acting freely, without any type of compensation. The social volunteering, as says the FCVS, is clearly the most significant of the sectors of the volunteering. Every year there is an income in participation, and the medios and forms grow helping positively to the social integration of everybody. The volunteer action can not be seen only in a numeric aspect, looking only to the number of volunteers or benefits or jobs generated and economic budget. It is believed that 13% of the Catalan population identifies their selves as volunteers, 90% consider the volunteering as a needed movement, and 87% think that volunteering should have a more important leading role to solve social problems.

The Federation organized the World Conference of Volunteering 2004, promoted by IAVE, inside the Forum of the Cultures Barcelona 2004.

Association of Entities for Social Action (ECAS)

2003: is born as a result of the new fusion of NGOs that are working in Catalonia in the social sector with the main objective of giving attention to groups that are under exclusion risk. Go to unit 1.

Network of Entities of the Third Social Sector of Catalonia

It was created in 2003 with the objective of working to improve the well-being of people with non-covered social needs and in priority to work for their social inclusion, the consolidation of the entities and the recognition of economic sectors actions, the public administrations and the whole Catalan society with the incidence of the social politics in Catalonia.
